Why Write Poetry Every Day?
In a world filled with various forms of artistic expression, poetry stands out as a powerful artistic medium and developing a daily writing habit has many benefits. Put the 2 together and you have artistic heaven!
As a writer, I’ve had a poetry habit for most of my life. I first fell in love with the artform as a child, quoting Banjo Patterson’s Man From Ironbark or Mulga Bill’s Bicycle (with actions) for the amusement of and connection with my family. Then later, in high school, when I was introduced to Dead Poet’s Society and T.S. Eliot’s Lovesong Of J Alfred Prufrock, my love of poetry truly soared. I wrote it every day and everywhere! In the car, my journal, the back of my text books… I tried every form and finally found my niche in Haiku and Free Verse.

Why write poetry?
In a world filled with various forms of artistic expression, poetry stands out as a powerful artistic medium. It allows individuals to dive deep into their emotions and experiences, conveying them through carefully chosen words, vivid imagery, and rhythmic language. It also serves as a means of communication, connecting people on a deeper level and fostering understanding.
Writing poetry can be cathartic, offering a release for pent-up emotions and a tool for self-reflection. It encourages individuals to observe and reflect on the world around them, finding beauty and meaning in everyday experiences.
1. Self-Expression:
Poetry provides a platform for individuals to express themselves in a deeply personal and artistic way. Through carefully chosen words, vivid imagery, and rhythmic language, poets can convey their thoughts, emotions, and experiences. Writing poetry becomes an outlet for self-reflection, allowing individuals to better understand themselves and the world around them.
2. Creativity:
One of the most appealing aspects of poetry is its ability to ignite creativity and imagination. Poets have the freedom to play with language, experiment with various writing styles and techniques, and create something truly unique. Writing poetry stimulates the creative mind, providing a satisfying and fulfilling creative process.
3. Communication:
Poetry has a remarkable capacity to communicate complex ideas and emotions in a condensed and impactful manner thanks to a vast array of Literary Devices, what I consider to be the essential tools of writing. Through the power of carefully chosen words and rich imagery, poetry can convey deep emotions, tell stories, and evoke strong reactions in readers. It serves as a bridge, connecting people on a deeper level and fostering understanding and empathy.
4. Catharsis:
Writing poetry can be a cathartic experience for many individuals. It offers a means to release pent-up emotions, process difficult experiences, and find solace in the act of putting words to paper. Poetry becomes a therapeutic tool for self-reflection and healing, allowing individuals to navigate their emotions and find solace in their own words.
5. Reflection and Observation:
Poetry encourages individuals to observe the world around them with a keen eye. It prompts introspection and reflection on life, nature, relationships, and the human condition. This is especially true of Haiku! Writing poetry helps individuals make sense of the world and find meaning in everyday experiences. It allows them to capture the essence of a moment, paint vivid imagery, and create a sense of rhythm and musicality through the use of language.
